, thank you. president obama is cutting short his holiday in hawaii. he's flying back to washington tonight as the clock ticks toward the fiscal cliff. nancy cordes is with the president in honolulu. nancy? >> reporter: jim, the president is trading the sand for snowy washington. he'll be back in the nation's capital by mid-morning tomorrow, and most of the u.s. senate will be attempting to get back there by then, as well. but house leaders have not given their members the signal to return to washington and say they won't until the u.s. senate passes a bill to avert the fiscal cliff. as the president wrapped up his vacation, federal workers trickled back into the nation's capital. but the only people who can avert the fiscal cliff, members of the house and senate, have not returned, and, in just six days, a 2% payroll tax is set to expire, along with the bush era tax cuts, shrinking the average workers' paycheck in 2013 by about $1,500. long-term unemployment benefits for about two million jobless americans are also set to expire, and $110 billion worth of spending cuts to both dome

the president is cutting his holiday vacation in hawaii short to return to d.c. to work on a deal to try to stop those automatic tax hikes and deep spending cuts from kicking in on january 1st. and if they don't reach a deal before then, many economists say we will dip back into a recession. i had henly house republican leaders didn't have a lot of new information for their lawmakers. they would have 48 hour notice if they are needed to pray back to washington from various districts around the country. that tells us they are being noncommittal at this point because they frankly do not know whether or not there will be a deal to avert the fiscal cliff. now, after that conference call. the house speaker john boehner, his number two eric cantor the majority leader put out a statement putting the onus on president obama and for the reason why there has not been a deal so far. basically saying they can't move forward in the house without some sort of action in the senate the next few days. what they left out of that, unfortunately, is the reason why they are waiting on the senate to do so

said before he went to the family vacation in hawaii that he wanted something that would be scaled down, not a massive grand bargain that would protect the current tax rate for people who earned less than $250,000 a year or perhaps a different figure if they reached that. but trying to protect the middle class. so officials here haven't seen it yet, but this is kind of today's volley in what has been this ongoing battle. house speaker john boehner has been saying the president must act and it appears the president is prepared to do that with another offer. and senate democrats would presumably be right on board with that. hopefully we will get details sometime this afternoon. then we'll see where we are. there isn't much time left. as you know, there are many people who have sorted of scaled back the breathless approach to what is a fiscal cliff and are a little bit more low key about it now. obviously, there are deadlines. but if it goes into january, there is not the alarm bell kind of issue that we've seen with other scale mates unless, of course, the markets were to act on the
